BHOPAL - June 28, 2012 - The trading of the first solar renewable energy certificates (RECs) at two power trading exchanges Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and Power Exchange India (PXIL) bodes well for the solar energy industry in India. The immediate significance of this is the confidence in the market that the solar energy industry could sustain itself through market mechanism and not necessarily only through subsidies and feed-in tariffs. India's potential leadership in generation and utilization of renewable energy gets a boost from the rapidly increasing trade in RECs.
Generation-based tradable RECs awarded to those who generate electricity from renewable sources such as wind, biomass, hydro and solar, may be bought by 'obligated entities', who are either specified consumers or electricity distribution companies. Voluntary buyers, too, as their commitment to a cleaner environment, may buy these RECs. This market mechanism greatly aids the proliferation of sustainability practices, and a more widespread adoption of renewable energy as a source of power. The sharp increase in solar PV RECs being traded in the month of June 2012 could prove to be the harbinger of a trend.
SunCarrier Omega, one of only seven Solar PV registered RE Generators in India, recently commissioned India's first sun-tracking solar PV park under the REC scheme. Located in central India, in Bilkheria, Bhopal, this 105 kWp plant generates about 40% more electricity than similarly rated fixed solar installations. With the successful implementation of this highly efficient plant, SunCarrier Omega is embarking on a 5 MWp project to be commissioned under the REC scheme. Incorporating the best technologies, like the sun-trackers from GILDEMEISTER Energy Solutions, Schott Solar modules, SMA inverters and LAPP Cables, backed by superior installation and operations and maintenance practices, the SunCarrier Omega solar park would be another pioneering effort in promoting a very high quality, long lasting energy source.
