MUNICH - June 16, 2012 - As the curtains came down on the world's largest solar industry exhibition, the three-day Intersolar Europe 2012 at Munich, more than 66,000 visitors from 160 countries, and 1,909 exhibitors from 49 countries went back with renewed vigor and the belief that despite the slowdown, the solar energy industry is a sustainable business. A case in point was GILDEMEISTER Energy Solutions, which booked orders worth Euro 25.6 million at the event.
Unlike previous editions of this annual exhibition, visitors from African and Latin American nations, Australia, and the USA overshadowed the Chinese delegates. Visitor interest was in equal parts in large-scale photovoltaic projects as well as in integrated renewable energy (RE) solutions encompassing generation, storage and utilization of renewable energy. An example of an integrated renewable energy project that attracted considerable attention from project developers, academicians, and potential customers was the SunCarrier Omega Net-Zero Energy Building.
The proliferation of RE projects worldwide, and the increasing dependence on such solutions for the daily energy requirement, the importance of large capacity energy storage has acquired centre-stage status in RE forums. GILDEMEISTER's modular CellCube system - the vanadium redox flow batteries that can be configured with an output of 10 to 30 kilowatts and a scaleable capacity, thus, became a big draw at the event. The low-maintenance technology can be upgraded to 1 megawatt and provides an uninterruptible and off-grid power supply.
Visitors to the exhibition also evinced keen interest in newer paradigms of financial modeling of RE projects. Of particular interest to those from India was the REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) scheme, which supports large RE projects through market mechanisms as opposed to the subsidy-led schemes. SunCarrier Omega, as one of only six accredited firms offering solar PV solutions under the REC scheme, fielded many engaged discussions on potential project engagements. SunCarrier Omega recently commissioned its first solar PV plant under this scheme as part of its initiative of constructing large-scale photovoltaic projects for investors.
